What is Stress?

Stress is an automatic physical reaction to a danger or demand. Muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, the heart speeds up and extra adrenaline rushes through the system.

Positive Stress.

Stress is a fact of life and everyone feels its effects. Significantly, positive stress can provide us with an inspiration to meet life's challenges. However, too much stress can be harmful both physically and mentally. Consequently, we need a mechanism to be able to control stress so it doesn't control us.

Negative Stress.

The negative effects of stress can take a significant toll on our emotional well-being. In the long-term, the consequences can lead to burn out and depression. Additionally, affected individuals may resort to drugs and/or alcohol as an escape or coping mechanism.

Some Helpful Hints.

The following lifestyle management skills could serve as a starting point to cope with stress:

  • Maintaining a clear perception
  • Being positive
  • Finding alternatives and hobbies
  • Taking time-out for yourself
  • Observing tasks and principles of meditation-based stress management (refer to meditation link)
